Mumbai owes much of its initial rise as a commercial centre to the cotton textile industry based here. Though in the last few decades the prominence of the textile industry has somewhat waned, Mumbai is still home to 3 of the 5 biggest textile companies in India. Collectively this textile industry employs tens of thousands of skilled and unskilled labor and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.
Entertainment
The Hindi entertainment industry took roots in Mumbai in the early 20th century and has flourished here ever since. Mumbai is now the heart of the Hindi Film Industry.
Bollywood, as the industry is colloquially known, employs tens of thousands of artists and technicians with more joining the ranks every year. ‘Bollywood’ churns out a massive number of movies every year and surpasses any other film industry in the world in terms of size and output.

Mumbai is a major automobile-manufacturing centre. Everything from cars, tractors and heavy vehicles is manufactured here. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., one of India’s biggest automobile manufacturers, has its headquarters here and numerous small, medium and large sized companies operate vehicle-manufacturing plants in and around the city.
Information Technology
The largest IT company in India, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is based in Mumbai. TCS employs more than 3,00,000 employees and generates annual revenues exceeding $10 billion. Mumbai also has a significant BPO workforce and the size of the IT industry in Mumbai has increased steadily in the last decade.
Pharmaceuticals
5 of the 10 biggest pharmaceutical companies in India are based out of Mumbai. Lupin, Glaxo Smithkline and Sun Pharmaceutical all have their corporate offices here. The city has the single biggest concentration of pharma bigwigs anywhere in the country.
